Hollywood has lost an icon.

Famed director and producer Garry Marshall has passed away at the age of 81.

According to a statement from his publicist, Marshall died due to complications from pneumonia, which he contracted in the hospital after suffering a stroke.

Marshall has created some of TV’s most iconic shows since the 1950s, such as Happy Days, MorkMindy, The Odd Couple and Laverne & Shirley.

He also directed a slew of popular movies during the course of his long and successful career, including BeachesPretty Woman, Runaway Bride and The Princess Diaries 1 & 2, among many others.

“He loved telling stories, making people laugh, and playing softball, winning numerous championships,” Marshall’s publicist said in a statement. “Even at age 81, he had a record this year of 6 – 1 pitching for his team.”

Marshall leaves behind his wife over over 50 years, Barbara Sue Marshall, as well as his three children and six grandchildren.
