Golf will return to the Olympics this summer for the first time since 1904, but it will be missing one of the world’s best players.
Rory McIlroy has decided not to represent Ireland at the Brazil games over fears of the Zika virus. McIlroy, who is the 4th-ranked golfer in the world, isn’t the only one backing out of the Olympics. Adam Scott and Vijay Singh are among others who have already said they will be staying home. Rickie Fowler is also said to be considering missing it.
McIlroy said in a statement, “After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else.” (ESPN)
