Out today (April 15th) is Santana IV (Four) — the first new album from the original classic lineup of Santana since 1973’s Caravanserai. Santana IV features Carlos Santana, Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, percussionist Michael Carbello, and drummer Michael Shrieve — along with current Santana members Karl Perazzo on percussion and Benny Rietveld bass. The classic band will open tonight for Journey, which was formed by Schon and Rolie following their early-’70s exits from Santana.
Before the original lineup played earlier this week at New York’s Madison Square Garden, we asked Carlos Santana about the original band — which shares the same name as his current band — performing nationwide. We asked Santana if he would be hitting a snag seeing as how “Santana” signed on for an extended residency at Las Vegas’ The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino with the contract stipulating it will be the only venue the band plays west of the Mississippi. Santana told us: “I could say, ‘Well, with this original band, y’know, didn’t sign the contract. I don’t see Gregg’s signature in here.’ So, I might. Y’know, it all depends on how we do tomorrow night and the other two gigs, and we’re taking it one step at a time. If the rest of the world shows an immense t hirst for this original Santana, like we’re seeing that is happening, then we will consider just going with that band — and maybe have the Supernatural band open for it.
