Today, ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons releases his very first solo album, the excellent (and excellently titled) Perfectamundo. And he has a string of solo dates lined up, featuring his backing band The BFG’s to support it. But ZZ Top fans shouldn’t worry: he notes that his “main” gig is always his long standing trio.

But, perhaps surprisingly, he’s also planning a reunion with his pre-ZZ band, the Moving Sidewalks.  Back in 2013, the psychedelic group got together to do two shows, their first in 44 years. And he tells that he has more planned with them.

Gibbons said that after the shows, “I suggested that the Moving Sidewalks consider going back into the studio. Surprisingly, they were all about it. The question then became, ‘Do we want to write new songs? Do we want to play old ones in a new way?’  We did both. I bet that that will probably see the light of day sooner than later. We have one or two things still bubbling under. I said, ‘Wait, we got more!’ More is good!”

As for a few more tour dates with the Sidewalks? “Yes, time permitting, they’re ready and willing.”

In the meantime, ZZ Top is getting ready to follow up 2012’s La Futura; Gibbons says his bandmates – bassist/singer Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard – are supportive of his solo endeavor. “Perfectamundo has stimulated their excitement. First of all, they got excited about me going out on the road, while they get a nice holiday. But in so doing, I stimulated and peaked their curiosity. Now Frank’s working on new drum beats while Dusty’s working on bass lines. And by the time I get back, ZZ will be going back to square one in the studio with some really intriguing stuff.”
