9/11 Day of Service — Ways You Can Join Even If You Don’t Have Much Time

The anniversary of the the tragic events in 2001 has become the largest annual day of charitable engagement in the United States. Each year more than 40 million Americans observe September 11 by performing good deeds. The goal of 9/11 Day is to keep alive the spirit of unity and compassion that arose in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, providing a positive, helpful way for people to annually remember and pay tribute to the 9/11 victims, and honor those that rose in service in response to the attacks.

Even if you don’t have much time you can find ways to participate. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Drop off cookies at your neighborhood firehouse
  2. Pay for the coffee/car wash for the person in line behind you
  3. Hold the door open for someone
  4. Let someone merge in in that construction zone
  5. Mow your neighbor’s lawn
  6. Stop at that lemonade stand in your neighborhood and over-tip
  7. Send a surprise book to someone
  8. Compliment a parent whose child is behaving in the store
  9. Put change in expired meters (but don’t get caught!)
  10. Send a quick thank-you email to a teacher who made a difference in your life (or your child’s)
  11. If you eat out leave an extra-big tip
  12. Leave a sticky note that says “You look great” on a restroom mirror
  13. Send dessert to another table
  14. Drop off pet food at an animal shelter
  15. Take an extra umbrella to loan to someone (they will probably need it today)
  16. Register as an organ donor
  17. Donate to a local fundraiser
  18. Let someone go ahead of you in line
  19. Leave coupons near products in the grocery store
  20. Leave a dollar at a vending machine
