The news leaked earlier today that the Foo Fighters were going to be the final musical guest on the last-ever episode of The Late Show with David LettermanLetterman recounted how the Foo Fighters were his top request to perform on the show after he had heart surgery. They were on tour, Letterman said, but they came back to play the show. “God bless you gentleman,” Letterman said to the band on tonight’s episode.

It was a touching story, and after Letterman uttered the words “thank you, and good night,” the Foo Fighters kicked into gear. Watch it above.

As they blasted through a powerful version of “Everlong,” the screen filled with an equally fast and furious montage of Letterman moments from the last few decades, from Bruce Springsteen and giant cats to Drew Barrymore’s famous flash and even a clip of Larry “Bud” Melman.

And, of course, the lyrics resonated with the weight of the moment at hand—the fact that Letterman was ending his 33 years as a much-beloved late-night television host.
