The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute in New York City. It marks the grand opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. It has turned into an opportunity for celebrities to take dressing up to a whole new level, as many try to incorporate the exhibit’s theme (this year it’s China: Through The Looking Glass) into their gown.

Check out the photos HERE, and keep reading, because here are my thoughts:

Kerry Washington looks like that Barbie cake you get for your daughter’s 8th birthday party. I like Chloe Sevigny‘s dress but it looks like it’s about to fall off. I love the blue of Elizabeth Banks‘ dress, but WHY is everybody wearing cutouts? I find them unnecessary. I kind of like Madonna‘s dress but wonder if that is the chain to her purse across her body or if she’s wearing a sword she plans to use later. Jennifer Lopez and (especially) Beyonce decided to go with the through-the-looking-glass aspect of the costume. Seriously girls (you don’t get to be called Ladies when you’re dressed like that) I don’t want to have to wonder about your choice (or lack of) undergarments. Next time wear a WHOLE dress. Jennifer Connelly looks like she was attacked by a doily (That reminds me, Hi Grandma!). I don’t know what is up with Allison William‘s dress but the bottom is so wide and crazy that it actually looks like she’s on stilts. Sofia Vergera‘s dress is pretty, but kind of “eh.” I like the color and design on Katie Holmes‘ dress but it looks so stiff.  If she sits down I imagine it would fly up – like the dress on a dance-hall-girl in a silly Western. I’m still not happy with Amal Clooney (for stealing George, of course) but I kind of love her crazy tiered dress. Reese Witherspoon chose to go with simple and pretty, though I wish the neckline were a little different; softer.  Kate Hudson chose to go with simple and GOLD – I think it’s great. (It reminds me of Holly Hutton‘s blue bridesmaids gowns).  Rhianna apparently decided to take the very fancy comforter off the bed in her guest room and wear that. Anna Wintour, the Editor of Vogue, is wearing the equivalent of the flower arrangement in the middle of the table.  If she turns to talk to the person next to her she’s going to have to move her sleeves.

I give Anne Hathaway the win.  She managed to dress simply, suggest the theme, AND work in a nod to Star Wars Day. Check out her lovely hooded gold gown.

And Sarah Jessica Parker just went TOO FAR. The Heat Miser called, he’d liked his hair back.
