Teletubbies, those sweet, innocuous children’s programming icons of the ’90s, have taken a existential and kind of disturbing turn in a new black and white video that shows the normally happy creatures forlornly frolicking to the sounds of Joy Division‘s gloomy 1980 single “Atmosphere.”

According to Vanyaland, the creepy clip was inspired by an online image of the Teletubbies in black and white that makes the normally cheerful creatures look downright terrifying.

That’s when Christopher Brown of Boston-based rock band Vary Lumar was moved to create an equally creepy black and white music video of the Teletubbies using “Atmosphere” as the soundtrack. Stripped on color, the Teletubbies joyful romp through fields looks more like an abstract horror film than a children’s TV show.
