The entire world is talking about Pretty Woman again, after the cast’s 25-year reunion. Nostalgia for the film is on a high, despite criticism that it glorifies prostitution.

Screenwriter J.F. Lawton revealed to Vanity Fair that the film was originally intended as a dark, gritty drama that got reinterpreted into a fairy-tale story by director Garry Marshall after Disney bought it. Thought Lawton is the only credited writer on the project, he says several other hands were brought in to punch up rewrites, and Marshall himself added a little sizzle, as did executive producer Lauren Zizkin, whom he names responsible for one of the most cloying lines in the film, “And she rescues him right back.”
