This week in December of 1989, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation had audiences in stitches in theaters, Elvis Presley’s $100-million estate was turned-over to his daughter, Lisa, and New Kids On The Block scored a top ten hit with “This One’s For The Children” from their holiday album Merry, Merry Christmas.
With the group having achieved massive success with their sophomore album Hangin’ Tough, New Kids manager Maurice Starr saw a huge window of opportunity for the holiday shopping season by releasing Merry, Merry Christmas. The album catapulted into the top ten upon its release, reaching double-platinum status not long afterward.
Another popular item around this time were the New Kids On The Block dolls and stage set from Hasbro toys. The dolls featured each member in fashionably detailed outfits and the stage was equipped with drums, amplifiers, and microphones.
