Today is the anniversary of the plane crash that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd members, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and his wife vocalist Cassie Gaines. Ultimate Classic Rock reminds us about the tragic event that happened in Mississippi when an overloaded private plane tried to land because of being low on fuel.

The wild thing is I remember where I was when I heard the news. I was at a Subway sandwich shop in Memphis, TN. It was ten ten years before they went on tour again and as we know Ronnie was replaced by his brother Johnny, Donnie is there other brother who is with 38 Special. The most memorable concert I have ever been at was in Birmingham AL, when Skynyrd began touring on the ten year anniversary of the tragic flight. People held up flames during the entire concert, and the show closed with “Freebird” but preformed as an instrumental, Ronnie’s hat was resting on the microphone while images of him played on the screen. It was true Rock n’ Roll heaven. “What song is it you want to hear.”

See the video below for a picture of the crash and news bulletin audio from that night 37 years ago to date.
