Kiss bassist Gene Simmons’ demon make-up design is one of the most recognizable looks in rock music. Although some may think it would be very simple to add an easy black and white greasepaint stencil on your face every night, but it’s much more complicated,

Gene’s daughter Sophie recently posted a video for Cosmopolitan.com where she had Gene apply his famous make-up on her face. Although he said he could apply the make-up in an hour, he usually takes two hours to apply the make-up to make sure it’s perfect from afar or close-up.

“We wanted to put together the band that we never saw on stage and one day we said, ‘Well, why don’t we wear makeup?'” Simmons explained. “And then everybody in the band put together their own designs. And mine was a culmination of kind of my fascination with horror movies, sci-fi and all that stuff.”

In the video, Gene shows you some interesting application tricks that will make you go “oh, that’s how he does it!” For instance, how he gets his tongue the perfect shade of red. After watching you will realize the make-up application is not as hard as putting the studs, leather, and 7-inch platform heels together.
