Chris Stein’s Negatives: See 5 Awesome Photos of Blondie

As a member of Blondie, Chris Stein was a firsthand witness to punk rock in its early inception in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Lucky for us, Stein captured a lot of it on film, seemingly bringing his camera with him everywhere

Today (September 23), Stein’s book of photos, Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punkhits shelves. In it, punk rock fans will find photos of David Bowiethe RamonesJoan Jett, and Iggy Pop, along with the artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat and John Waters’ gross-out muse, Divine.

Stein spoke with about five photos from the book, all of which happen to feature Blondie frontwoman, Debbie Harry.

“All of the public focus on Debbie?” Stein says in retrospect. “It was a bit weird, within the band. It was a bit different for me, of course.” Of course, being that Stein and Harry were romantically involved at the time. “There was a bit of ‘Lead Singer Syndrome,'” he says.

But, no one can deny, the camera—or, maybe in this instance specifically, the cameraman—loves Debbie Harry.

“That’s me in the reflection. I’m pretty sure that’s in Philadelphia, I think in the early ’80s. We were probably going to do a show there, wherever we were headed. All of the public focus on Debbie? It was a bit weird, within the band. It was a bit different for me, of course. There was a bit of ‘Lead Singer Syndrome.'”
