I heard whispers of a secret menu at Starbucks a couple of years ago. “Oh, you can get Harry Potter’s Butter Beer at Starbucks,” I was assured. “Yes! And Peach Cobbler and an amazing Cap’N Crunch Frappuccino!  It’s on the secret menu!”

The secret menu. Ah, yes.

But how to order it? Is there a secret handshake? A wink and a nod? Some clandestine gesture to let the barista know it was an item from the secret menu I was mulling over?

It was time to go undercover. Satellite maps showed 58 Starbucks to pick from in the 3 block radius around work. This would be a piece of cake. Or to put it in Starbucks terms: Salted Caramel Cake Pop.

But this could take time. Gathering intel on the secret menu would mean practically owning Four Square. I might become Mayor while trying to figure out this coffee conundrum! But I didn’t have Trenta time. I didn’t even have Venti or Grande time. Ironically, I had only the secret menu “short” time, as my son was finishing basketball practice. Calling on my “inner” Hammy from Over The Hedge, I  shot towards a  green apron. A bustling barista gave a thumbs up to my  “Instant Human Just Add Coffee” t-shirt, I ordered an Americano, gave my name as Walter Mitty and asked to see the manager. Within 30 seconds I was face to face with Michael  Lindberg (Starbucks #2517) and I asked him point blank: “What is the secret to the secret menu?”

The answer: know the recipe.

It’s that simple. You might find a barista who can whip up the Christmas Cookie Frappuccino, but in all likelihood you won’t. Fortunately, anyone can make anything if you tell them what you want. So if the Three Broomsticks isn’t on your way home, but Starbucks is – then you’ve captured the Golden Snitch! You can have a Butter Beer! You might love the Snickerdoodle and the Pink Starburst, too! There are several websites with recipes for what you’ll find on the secret menu. All created with an extra pump of this and an extra dash of that. Recipes for my favorites below.
