Tonight in New York City Members of Aerosmith and Foreigner will be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.  Currently there is no brick and mortar Hall of Fame.  It exists only online.

My ambition for the past couple of years has been to find a permanent home for it here in Detroit.  We have a rich history of songwriting here, from Mowtown to R&B, gospel to jazz, classical to rock.  Turns out, I’m a day late and a dollar short.

The new owners of New York’s Brill Building have big plans for the building that’s been a nerve center of the music business for decades.

A year-long renovation and modernization announced today (Wednesday) will bring new retail and commercial tenants, including the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which has nearly 400 inductees from all genres of music since being established in 1969.

1619 Broadway in New York was the home of numerous music publishing and songwriting firms — especially during the first decade of rock and roll. Legends such as Carole King, Paul Simon, Neil Sedaka and Neil Diamond worked out of the Brill Building, while many other artists were based within a few blocks of the 1930s Art Deco tower.

Songwriters Hall chairman Jimmy Webb says in a statement: “All of us at the Songwriters Hall Of Fame… look forward to being a part of the renaissance of the new Brill Building, once home to some of the greatest songwriters of all time. We’re extremely grateful for this opportunity to enhance the profile of the Songwriters Hall Of Fame and to successfully pursue our mutual interests with [lead investor] Eric Hadar and his partners.”
