Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Show On HBO Tomorrow Night

Heart, Randy Newman, Rush and Donna Summer are the performer inductees, and Lou Adler and Quincy Jones are the behind-the-scenes honorees, as HBO airs the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions Saturday night. The special broadcast, which will be repeated several times in coming weeks, blends speeches, tributes and some outstanding performances:

  • Heart’s original lineup is joined by Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell on “Crazy on You” and by Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell and Pearl Jams Mike McCready for “Barracuda.”
  • Randy Newman plays “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today” and is accompanied by the Eagles’ Don Henley on “I’m Dead but I Don’t Know It.”
  • Dedicating their award to the fans, Rush play their classics “Tom Sawyer” and “The Spirit of Radio.” In a special tribute, Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters, along with Nick Raskulinecz, perform Rush’s “2112/Overture.”
  • Jennifer Hudson puts her own spin on Donna Summer’s “Last Dance.”
  • In honor of Lou Adler, Carole King performs “So Far Away” from Tapestry, which Adler produced.
  • For Quincy Jones, Usher performs “Rock with You” from Michael Jackson’s album Off the Wall, which Jones produced.

The special is book-ended by all-star jams that have long been a staple of the induction galas. The night began with Randy Newman performing his classic “I Love L.A.,” joined by Jackson Browne, John Fogerty and Tom Petty. The evening’s finale of the Robert Johnson song “Crossroads” included Gary Clark Junior, Chris Cornell, John Fogerty, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Heart, Mike McCready, Tom Morello, Public Enemy and Rush.
