Today is a national holiday. A day when we remember and celebrate the life and times of legendary civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Most but not all schools are closed today in Detroit and in the suburbs. Many major companies are observing the national holiday including our company here at WOMC – CBS Radio.

Many communities, churches and businesses will have special events today for the holiday. And I’ll list some of them. Hope you can make it to some of the celebrations.

Everybody is invited to head to Central United Methodist Church located at 23 E. Adams at noon today in Detroit. A march follows at 1:30pm called the Great March to Freedom. In fact this is the 50th year for the event.

Another march takes place at Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School at 3200 E. Lafayette in Detroit. Doors open at 8:30 so you can check out all the exhibits. Then at 9:15 they will treat attendees to special music and dance performances put on by students at the school. A march follows the presentation.

Second Baptist Church of Detroit at 441 Monroe near Greektown is offering a special presentation at 11 o’clock this morning.

And of course, there will be a full day of activities at the beautiful Charles H. Wright Museum of African Museum History in downtown Detroit.

Enjoy your time off and remember, there’s an important reason that we celebrate this holiday.
