It has been jokingly said that Twinkies could survive for hundreds of yeas, perhaps even through a nuclear winter because of preservatives, etc. But the truth of the matter is that Twinkies may already be DOA.

The company that makes Twinkies, Hostess Brands, told striking workers to return to their jobs earlier this week or else. Well guess what? They’re still out on strike.

This morning Hostess issued a statement that it was closing for good and that all employees done working.

Twinkies were the brain child of James Dewar of Schiller Park, Illinois. He came up with the concept back in 1930. And believe it or not, the original Twinkies weren’t filled with a white, creamy substance. Nope they were filled with banana cream. Due to rationing during World War II the company was forced to abandon banana cream filling and switch to a vanilla cream. Dewar says he came up with the name after seeing a sign in St. Louis that advertised “Twinkle Toe Shoes.”

In all likelihood some other company will buy the rights to Twinkies and other products may by Hostess Brands. I could see “Little Debbie” Twinkies, for instance. But sadly, thousands and thousands of Hostess employees are now looking for a job.
