Changes are being made that will make it easier to get FAA approval to fly drones. Many different types of drones have been proposed including some that weight only 4 pounds. The thought is now public safety departments will start using drone technology for enforcement including catching speeders. Can you imaging being busted on I-696 for speeding by a drone. So much for the radar and laser detector.
Some Representatives in DC have concerns about the potential for drone technology to enable invasive and pervasive surveillance without adequate privacy protections as seen in the CNN report. “Many drones are designed to carry surveillance equipment, including video cameras, thermal imagers, radar and wireless network ‘sniffers,’ ” the representatives wrote. “The surveillance power of drones is amplified when the information from on-board sensors is used in conjunction with facial recognition, behavior analysis, license plate recognition or any other system than can identify and track individuals as they go about their daily lives.”
