Today is the deadline for filing your tax return with the IRS. And man how things have changed. Instead of making a mad dash to the post office, which stayed open late to accommodate late tax filers, most of us just hit a button and it’s done.
We’re getting a break form the Infernal Revenue Service this year. Since April 15th came on a Sunday that got us an extra day’s extension. And since yesterday was Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia, that got us another extra day. But alas, we have arrived at the deadline to file. This is it.
You must get your return into the mail by midnight tonight or e-file by midnight or file for an extension or pay a penalty.
It wasn’t long ago that many U.S. Post Offices stayed open late for last minute tax filers. Some in Metro Detroit even offered express service with postal workers standing in the street to grab your tax return as you motored by. Some post offices offered free coffee. But no more. To the best of our knowledge no Detroit area post offices plan to stay open late. Why? Because very few people file the old fashioned way nowadays. An estimated 80% of people file their tax returns by e-mail.
Filing by e-mail really is simple. You can follow online just where your taxes are during the IRS review. And if you have a refund coming, it comes in a flash.
At the Schuman household we claim every legitimate expense but we’ve never cheated or tried to cheat on our taxes. The only time we got audited was the year our daughter was born. We didn’t have health insurance at that time and had a lot of expenses associated with her birth. My wife went to the audit on her own and guess what? We came out ahead! The IRS actually owed us just over $200!
