Today is Fat Tuesday or Paczki Day around here! They come in a wide variety of flavors from custard to cherry to prune. And one year they came pizza flavored!
The “little old ladies” baked their hearts out overnight in Hamtramck turning out tens of thousands of paczki. Note I didn’t put an “s” on the end of the word because the last time I did somebody who knows Polish scolded me saying the word is like deer. Multiple deer aren’t deers. Same with paczki, I guess!
Some of the traditional favorite flavors of the donut like treats are custard, cherry, lemon and even prune. But one year pizza paczki were offered. I know because I was in on it.
At our radio station we started talking about Fat Tuesday several weeks out. We wanted to do something different, something that had never been done before. Somebody came up with the idea of a pizza paczki. But how could we do it?
We met with the PR folks at Little Caesars Pizza and they said they would take it under consideration. A few days later they called back and said they had been experimenting in their test kitchen and had come up with something they thought we would like. They brought some samples to the station and they were great.
The Little Caesars Pizza paczki looked a lot like a traditional paczki but in fact was made of pizza dough with lots of cheese and sauce inside. We handed them out free at the Little Caesars store in Hamtramck on Fat Tuesday and they were a huge hit.
Okay back to Paczki Day 2012. What’s your favorite flavor?
