I didn’t want to read Room by Emma Donoghue. Of course I’d heard about it when it came out. I read all the glowing reviews but couldn’t make myself buy the book. I have a hard time reading books or watching movies about children in peril. And the book is also written from the perspective of a five year-old, which I wasn’t sure I would buy into. But my Book Club chose it as our November selection and I am a rule follower so I got the book and started reading and couldn’t. put. it. down.
Room is the story of Jack and his Ma, who live in an 11 x 11 room which Jack knows as home and Ma knows as a prison. She was kidnapped by a man that Jack knows as Old Nick who has obviously abused her. Ma has created a wonderfully diverse world for Jack within the confines of their cell and he, of course, knows this as normal. She has even managed to keep Jack hidden from Old Nick. But she realizes that Jack is getting bigger and starting to ask questions and it’s getting harder to keep him hidden so she decides they must escape.
I won’t tell you anymore. It’s wonderfully written and a thought-provoking story on so many levels. I’d love to hear what you think!
