[photogallerylink id=65988 align=right] [mp3com-artist]Pete Townshend[/mp3com-artist] gave a lecture for the new John Peel Lecture Series calling out iTunes for their practice of being a “Digital Vampire.”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

With the speech pattern of an aging professor Townshend spouts out a list of “tips” for Apple, paraphrased below.

  •  Townshend suggests Apple employs twenty people from the “dying record business” to give editorial guidance to artists.
  •  Townshend asks Apple to provide financial support to chosen artist including free computers and music software!
  • Townshend wants Apple to follow the growth of these artists and provide a place for the musicians to share their music, “like a local radio station.”
  • Townshend wants Apple to help artists to protect their copyrights.
  • Townshend also wants Apple to market new artists and poll the public on music.
  • Townshend  wants Apple to license the best selling artists to record companies, book shops and mall based researchers and share revenue with Amazon.
  • Townshend also wants Apple to pay artists directly without a middleman.

I commend him for bringing up the topic, iTunes certainly has its flaws, but Townshend’s take on Apple’s ideal role in the music industry leaves me scratching my head.

In my own humble opinion it seems that Townshend has good intentions but his lecture leads me to believe he hasn’t discovered the internet yet.  Maybe he just logs into iTunes but has never tried clicking on that little blue “e” on his desktop.  There is an entire internet out there Pete!  You don’t have to rely on the radio or even iTunes to self-market your music anymore.  In my opinion there are more places to self-promote music than ever before.  Apple is a distribution center, not a record label!

What do you think of his lecture? Comment below.
