It was a drop dead beautiful Sunday in Metro Detroit and I spent my day helping to judge chili at the 16th Annual Great Lakes Regional Chili Cookoff in Plymouth. As always the cooks turned out some incredibly tasty chili!
- 1st Diane Lentz of Nicolsville, Kentucky
- 2nd Gail Donovan of Cincinnati, Ohio
- 3rd Jim Stoddard of Coppell, Texas
- 1st Richard Chauvin of Windsor, Ontario (This was his 3rd straight win!)
- 2nd Tom Pardikes of Plymouth, Michigan
- 3rd Lauren Ray of Liovnia, Michigan
First prize winners in both chili divisions will get to go to the 2012 World Chili Championship about a year from now in Charleston, West Virginia.
I almost forgot Bill Donovan from Cincinnati. Bill won the salsa competition.
I helped to judge the chili verde and the red chili and as judges, we had to make some tough decisions!
I’m still burping chili two days after the event! I sampled 21 batches of green chili, 24 batches of red chili and then another 10 batches of the red stuff in the finals. For the red, usually between 10 and 12 chilies are selected as finalists from the original 50 or 60 chilies.
Above and beyond the chili competition hundreds and perhaps thousands of bikers brought their motorcycles to Plymouth.
Congratulations to Ken and Annette Horn for organizing another incredible chili cookoff and I’m looking forward to next year’s event.
