Boston - Third Stage (MCA, 1986)

Odds-makers would have not likely bet a third [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Boston[/lastfm] album would have amounted to much on the charts. But they would’ve been wrong. There were enough of the 17 million fans who bought the first one to make Third Stage a success.

Released ten years after their smashing debut and more than eight years after their multi-platinum sophomore set, the third Boston album proved to be more successful on the charts than their biggest seller (which peaked at Number 3). Like Don’t Look Back, it landed at Number 1 on the US and Canadian grids and grabbed Top-40 status in six other countries.

It included their lone Number 1 single, the unadorned balladry of “Amanda,” as well as a Top 10 (“We’re Ready”) and the Top 20 “Can’tcha Say (You Believe in Me).”

With only vocalist Brad Delp and guitar svengali Tom Scholz left from the original Boston roster, it became clear they were the engine that drove the band right from the start. Their signature sound satisfied enough Boston fans the rev up sales of Third Stage to over 4,000,000 copies.
