Blues disciples [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]George Thorogood & the Destroyers[/lastfm] have always been carrying the torch for the classic Chicago sound. But on their latest record 2120 South Michigan Ave. they take things a step further, paying direct homage to legendary blues label Chess Records by covering some Chess classics and even referencing the address of label’s recording studio in the album title.

On 2120 they start things off with “Going Back,” a track that’s hard-hitting blues guitar riffs set the tone for the rest of the experience.

From 1956 to 1965, Chess Studio was the epicenter of blues music. The label was home to to greats such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley. In 1964 the studio’s address was immortalized on the classic Rolling Stones instrumental jam, titled 2120 South Michigan Avenue.

Now George Thorogood & the Destroyers look to leave their own mark on the institution that provided them with so much inspiration. “Going Back” is one of the two original songs on the new album, the rest are covers of classic tunes done in Thorogood’s signature rough and tumble style. This record shows, perhaps more than anything else done by Thorogood and his band, their deep knowledge and love for the blues.
