The Global Soul Festival will be held at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles this weekend.
The festival is tribute to Marvin Gaye and benefits music education. The idea was developed by Tonight Show bandleader Rickey Minor.
Rolling Stone reports Minor got the idea when watching [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gwen Stefani[/lastfm] and the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA.)
Minor said ” I called Stevie Wonder after seeing the kids and said, ‘Listen, I’m thinking about getting a music festival, would you do it with me? He said yes and from then on everything else just kind of fell into place.”
Scheduled artists include [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Grace Potter[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sharon Jones[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Janelle Monae[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Charles Bradley[/lastfm]. They’ll perform their own songs, as well as music tributes to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On album, with 2011 being the album’s 40th anniversary.
The festival is planned to be an annual event.
Minor, Potter, Jones, Bradley and YOLA will perform on the Tonight Show on Thursday night to promote the festival.
