A lot of people always give credit to the guitar player when they hear a great song. Often this leads to the guitarist being called one of the best of all time. What follows is a list of guitar players who routinely show up on lists of great players based on what the band did, not what their playing did for the band.

# 5 Slash of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Guns N’ Roses[/lastfm].

Yes Slash did give one of the greatest rock albums of all time with Appetite for Destruction.  But he brought nothing new to the table.  Nothing innovative.  Although it all sounds cool he never made me say “OH MY GOD HOW DID HE DO THAT?”

# 4 Joe Perry of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Aerosmith[/lastfm].

Yes, Joe did give some of the most recognizable riffs in rock and roll, but it was the infighting with Tyler and his drug use that made him famous.

# 3 Zakk Wylde

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ozzy Osbourne[/lastfm]’s hired gun and current leader of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Black Label Society[/lastfm]. The only reason we pay attention to Zakk is because he was a kid when he stepped in to Randy Rhodes’ shoes. It may just be me, But Zakk, can you please give me something more than just another “Pinch Harmonic”?

# 2 Angus Young of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]AC/DC[/lastfm].

A lot like Slash. Angus is a solid player but nothing special. New guitar players don’t learn AC/DC songs because they’re great but because they are simple. Can you say “POWER Chord”?

# 1 Jimmy Page of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Led Zeppelin[/lastfm].

OOOH he played his guitar with a bow. Lots of people will look at this as innovative. I see it as desperate attempt at be different. And for all of you who thought all the sounds on “Whole Lotta Love” was a guitar, it was a Theremin. If you disagree with my number one choice, just listen to any live Zeppelin track. Zeppelin is nothing more than a great studio cover band.

Others who did not make the list but deserve honorable mentions include: Pete Townshend of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Who[/lastfm], Kerry King from [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Slayer[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eric Clapton[/lastfm].
