[photogallerylink id=66429 align=right] The New York Post reports Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr. is developing an autobiographical Broadway musical!

Sources say Gordy has  a $100 million budget and is working with CEO of Universal Music, Doug Morris, and Rent producer Kevin McCollum.

There is speculation that Gordy, age 81, is trying to set the record straight in the face of other potential projects on the subject.

Gordy owns the rights to the majority of the Motown tracks and is rumored to be blocking attempts to produce a [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Marvin Gaye[/lastfm] biopic which may portray Gordy in a negative fashion.

“He [Gordy] basically owns the rights to the Marvin Gaye story,” a source told the NY Post. “And he’s been quietly blocking the scripts and music because he doesn’t want his name dragged through the mud.”

Gordy’s publicist Adrian Bryan-Brown denies these claims saying “All licensing of anything Motown has to go through EMI. Mr. Gordy is unaware of any projects being blocked.”

Regardless of music rights and who says what about whom I for one am so excited about this project and hope the storyline has  room to represent the Motor City. If this show goes on the road and comes to Detroit I’ll be there.
