[photogallerylink id=56713 align=right] [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Paul Simon[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bob Dylan[/lastfm] both make it into my personal top ten musicians/songwriters list ([lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cat Stevens[/lastfm] is in there too somewhere.) I’m not going to list them here in order because I don’t want to make Paul Simon sad.

Apparently,  the constant comparing of Paul Simon to Bob Dylan has left Simon with a little bruise on his ego. He told Rolling Stone “”I usually come in second. I don’t like coming in second.

Simon also explained what he thinks the main difference is;  “One of my deficiencies is my voice sounds sincere… I’ve tried to sound ironic. I don’t. I can’t. Dylan, everything he sings has two meanings. He’s telling you the truth and making fun of you at the same time. I sound sincere every time. Rock ‘n’ roll has a lot to do with image. If that’s not your strength, people find fault with the work.

He also credited Dylan as an inspiration. ” ‘The Sound of Silence’ wouldn’t have been written if it weren’t for Dylan. But I left that feeling around ‘The Graduate’ and ‘Mrs. Robinson.’ They weren’t folky anymore.”

Personally, Paul Simon’s music just makes me happy, Bob Dylan’s music makes me happy but at the same time it makes me “hate the man” and not want to work on Maggie’s farm no more.

What do you think the main difference is?

Whose music do you like more?  (Pssst.  Vote for Paul Simon, you’ll make him feel better)

Paul Simon is a great singer and songwriter, but Bob Dylan is an artist for the universe…
Like George Harrison once said, Dylan will be remembered when the Beatles have been forgotten for decades!
