bono Bono Defends Controversial And Political Song 'Shoot The Boer'

Bono has always reminded me of that one kid in high school or college… you know the guy who is always looking for a cause to latch onto but sometimes endorses things without fully understanding them?  That kid usually wore tie dye and carried an army bag and listened to world music.  Remember that kid?

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]U2[/lastfm] frontman Bono may have endorsed something he didn’t fully understand when he defended the song, “Shoot The Boer.” Spinner reports a group in South Africa is lobbying to ban ” Shoot the Boer” because they believe the lyrics, which reference shooting white farmers, should be considered hate speech.Bono defended the song to South Africa’s Sunday Times:

[pullquote quote=””I was a kid and I’d sing songs I remember my uncles singing … rebel songs about the early days of the Irish Republican Army.” He sang one of them, the lyrics telling of carrying guns and getting them ready for action. “We sang this and it’s fair to say it’s folk music .. as this was the struggle of some people that sang it over some time. But would you want to sing that in a certain community? It’s pretty dumb. “Yet it’s about where and when you sing those songs. There’s a rule for that kind of music.””]

The legal representative for AfriForum, Willie Spies,  responded to Bono’s statement  saying, “It’s good practice for any visitor not to pass comment on the affairs of a foreign country in their first week there. Bono comes from Dublin where the situation is very different: people are not on the streets fearing for their lives every day. If he had taken cognisance of the fact that life is different in South Africa, he might not have said it.

I commend Bono for caring about politics and trying to support a cause but he should probably slow down and learn a bit more about a region before doing local interviews on very local and very controversial topics.
