Tragically ‘Under The Boardwalk’ was set to be recorded on May 21, 1964, but the band’s lead singer, Rudy Lewis, unexpectedly died of a heroin overdose the night before. Rather than reschedule the studio session  former Drifters lead vocalist Johnny Moore sang for the recording. The single went to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

when i first heard the Drifters song Under the Broadwlk,at first i thought it was Ben E King singing the lead but it was the late Rudy Lewis he died before recording it but it was the late Johnny Moore who rejoin the group and sang the lead vocals.

This is a classic! Johnny Moore was supposed to be the lead vocalist, but all Drifters were outstanding. One of my favorites.

  3. Alan says:

were the Drifters the first artists to sing under the boardwalk?
