deeppurple Today In Music History Deep Purple

[lastfm]Deep Purple[/lastfm] made their debut on April 20, 1968 in Denmark. It was actually only after their brief tour of Denmark that they decided on the name: Deep Purple, which was Ritchie Blackmore’s grandmother’s favorite song.

There have been eight different line-ups of Deep Purple and the band experienced a hiatus from 1976–84.  Some of the bands most well-known songs include, ‘Highway Star’, ‘Child In Time’ and of course ‘Smoke On The Water.’  ‘Smoke on the Water’ was released on the album Machine Head, in 1972, and was released as a single in 1973.  The song reached #4 in the charts.  Interestingly, ‘Smoke On The Water’ was written about the Montreux Casino which burned down during a [lastfm]Frank Zappa[/lastfm] and [lastfm]The Mothers of Invention[/lastfm] concert when a concert go-er shot a flare into the rattan ceiling.

Deep Purple is currently embarking on a world tour which ends in December 2010.
