In 1959 Berry Gordy Jr. borrowed an $800 loan from his family to create Tamla Records. In 1960, Gordy formed Motown Records as a second label.  Fifty years ago today he merged the two labels into a new company – Motown Record Corporation

Motown Record Corporation was incorporated on April 14, 1960. Gordy signed artists such as  [lastfm]The Supremes[/lastfm], [lastfm]Marvin Gaye[/lastfm], [lastfm]The Temptations[/lastfm], [lastfm]The Four Tops[/lastfm], [lastfm]Gladys Knight & the Pips[/lastfm], [lastfm]The Commodores[/lastfm], [lastfm]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm], and [lastfm]The Jackson 5[/lastfm]. From 1961 to 1971, Motown had 110 top 10 hits!

Motown Records relocated to Los Angeles in 1972 and was sold in 1988 to MCA and Boston Ventures and then sold once more in 1994 to PolyGram.

The Motown Historical Museum or  “Hitsville USA”, is the house that originally served as both Berry Gordy’s home and the company’s headquarters.  For more information visit motownmuseum.com
